Hello, my name is Maylis. I am 20
years in Korea and I come from France.
I will talk
about the different stereotypes in France and Korea.
Stereotypes about Korea in France.
-“hey, you are going to eat dog!” Yes, in
France, some people still think that Korean people eat a lot of dog food so
when you say that you will go to Korea, they tell you this joke. But this is not
really untrue because here you can find some restaurant where you can eat dog
food but it’s uncommon and most of the Koreans are against eating god food.
-“You will go to Korea but…don’t do lot of
plastic surgery okay?” In France, Korea is very renowned for their plastic
surgery. Indeed, French people know that Korean people do a lot of plastic
surgery and know that half of the Korean woman did it once. Also the Korean
make-up is very know and many French woman hope that more Korean make-up will
be exported to France during these following years.
-“You like Korea? So do you like Kpop?” This
years, more and more French people know Korea because of Kpop. In fact, French
people like Kpop a lot because it’s so different than French songs, the Kpop
idols are beautiful, they sing and dance at the same time and we can also learn
their dances. Kpop has so many styles that everybody can find the one that
he/she likes. Kpop is so much popular in France that there are some Kpop shops
where you can buy goodies, albums, posters, stickers, bags, magazines... Also,
it has been said that a Kpop academy will soon open in France!
-“I really look forward seeing some copies of
Lee Minho in every Korean street “ Lots of French teenage girls say that in
France. Because of the popularity of K-dramas in my country, lots of girls can
see beautiful men in every TV show and think that’s it’s everywhere like this
in Korea. But this is not true. There is not always beautiful men in Korean street
but the cult of beauty established by Korea made us, strangers, think like
that. That’s same with traffic. In dramas, you notice that the car’s man is
alone in the Seoul’ street. But the fact is that there is a lot of traffic jam
in the South Korea’s capital.
-“I will go to Korea.-I hope you’ll go to
South Korea.” Even if 9 000 km separates France to Korea, we do know
the situation of conflict between South and North Korea. Some people, who likes
to joke, still say sometimes “ are you going to north or south?” but this kind
of joke are really misplaced.
Stereotypes about France in Korea
-“I love the French bakery named Paris
Baguette”” This is a famous bakery in Korea. “Paris Baguette”. But even if
the name says it’s French bakery which sells French food, it’s absolutely not
true! There isn’t “Paris Baguette” in France and the bakery which is sell here
is not French food. This is a Korean bakery which sells imitation of French
food. (actually the only French food there is the baguette.) If you really want
to go to a French restaurant, go to “Brioche Dorée” , this is the only one REAL
French restaurant that I have noticed since I am here, the others like “Paris
Baguette” or “Tous les Jours” are just some pretenders French food restaurant.
“I really like France I mean Paris” No
Paris is not France, and France is not Paris. Some Koreans only know Paris and
think that there isn’t any big city other than Paris. But there is a lot , like
Lyon, Toulouse, Lille , Marseille.
-“Is frog legs and snails good ? ”Koreans
really like French food so lots of people here think that every french people
eat frog legs and snails. But the fact is that it’s just a part of the
population who eat this. Indeed, these foods are very expensive so everybody
can’t eat it. Furthermore, frog legs and snails are not a meal that French
people eat everyday.
-“This is like french fashion right?
” I noticed that Korean really like French fashion so sometimes they ask
me if what they wear is like French fashion. But it’s very hard for me to
answer because in France fashion can be very different. Furthermore, very
often, Korean have their own fashion style, and even if they say it quite like
French fashion, I can’t imagine French people wearing this kind of clothes.
It’s so touching to see that Korean people really like our fashion, so they try
to put effort to copy our style. But, actually, for me , Korean style is much
more better than French one because here everybody wear fashion clothes or are
wearing beautiful clothes which is not the case in France, because lots of
people don’t know how to dress and have an ugly appereance. About fashion, the
difference is that in korea almost everybody have the same kind of clothes but
in France there are so much different styles ( classic,
-“I bought a Tshirt and on it there is French
words. I love it but what does it means?” To end with fashion, I noticed
that here lots of clothes like sweater have some French words written on. It
makes me so happy that Korean like French so much that they designed some
clothes with French words on, but sometimes the meaning of the sentence don’t
have sense. So it’s very fun. It’s same with some decorating stuff. It’s
supposed to be written in French but the meaning is nonsense and it’s full of
are the more obvious stereotypes about French and korea that I noticed here.
Even if we like each other country, it’s so fun to see the wrong or real idea
that the strangers have from their own country about the foreign one. I was
really surprised when I came in Korea because I used to have some other point
of view about this country but what I saw here was sometimes very different.
For me there is nothing better than travelling and discover the world by
