The difference between French and Korean school
My name is Tiffany. I am from France and I am 16 years old there, 18 in Korea. I
went to Korea for one year, since I wanted to have a culture shock, and to see
a country different than mine.
I'll talk about the Korean school, and the French one.
The School years :
We start the middle school at 11 years old (french age). And stay there 4 years, after we can choose differents high schools :
- A general and technological high school, to pass the Baccalauréat (exam you have to pass to attend university) in Science,
Literature, Economical and social or Science and technogie of management.
- A professional high school, to study a job with one part at school and an other on the ground.
- A Certificat of professional aptitude to start learning work.
So we begin high school at 16 years old (french age) and finish at the majority 18 years old.
This is a normal curriculum without repeating.
The Lessons :
In the French high school, there are obligatory courses ; French, History and Geography, English and one other living langage like Italian, German or Spanish. Math, Chemistry, Physical, Biology, Sport and Civic juridical and social education
At the first grade, there is an explorationcourse about economy.
We can choose one optional course ; like latin or grec, another living langage, art, sport…
And a personalized support for all student.
The planning :
We have quite the same planning than the Korean high school, it's starts at 8 am or 8:30 am until 5 pm or 6 pm. Except on wenesday where we finish at 12 pm or 12:30 pm. During lunch, we have one or two
hours of break so we go to the high school cafeteria or eat outside of the school. Between classes we change class room and can go out of the school. But we don't stay at school until 10 pm to study.
The uniform :
There isn't in France, all students have one
style and can keep it, ( piercing, tattoo, hair color...) as long as this is
not indescent ( short scurt, short, neckline…).
To wear an uniform have some good point like
for exemple to fix the discrimination or anything else. And for me to take less
time at morning. But the Korean students want to be same ( same make up, same
haircut…) so with an uniform they lost any personnality.
The relationship : the relationships between teachers and students
are clother in Korea than in France, they can laught or talk easier with
respect and I love it, but the relationships between students are like one part
of girl and one part of boy ( on free time, lunch time and sport) they don't
stay toghether, it's sad. Also the is an corporate ladder even at school.
So even I jealous this uniform and the respect, for me the Korean school is more
exhausting as much mentally that physically, because I see so much pressure on
the students to be THE best one, for the best university. This kind of ranking
bothers me. I am sure, I can't keep the beats of
waking up at 7:30 am while I went to sleep at 12 am or more late every day. I
can study but i need to be heathly. To conclude , french school helps us to
developp our own opinion which is not the case here in Korea. Because of that ,
I can't notice any maturity from the students and it makes me feel sad.
